Class action lawsuit filed against major cosmetics retailer

People have reason to believe that companies will be reasonable honest with consumers. Unfortunately, there are unscrupulous businesses that not only keep consumers in the dark regarding their practices, but they may also engage in practices that are potentially harmful. This is what several people allege in a class action lawsuit filed against the cosmetics retailer Ulta. The claim, which includes the state of Illinois, is that the company resold returned products without consumers' knowledge.

Over a year ago, a former Ulta employee took to social media claiming that the makeup giant would resell returned makeup products at the full price normally charged for brand new products. The alleged former employee's now-viral Twitter post detailed how products were repackaged and sold as new. A woman in another state filed the initial lawsuit asking for unspecified damages. Since then, over 20 other customers decided to participate in a class action lawsuit against the company.

Though a judge here in Illinois gave the suit the go-ahead, Ulta is viewing the ruling favorably, as its spokesperson says the scope of the claims have been streamlined and reduced to the 18 states in which the plaintiffs reside. The judge rejected a claim that consumers were harmed by purchasing products that are new and unused. Ulta remains optimistic regarding its ability to fight the suit.

When a company fails to honor its claims to consumers, it puts them at risk of potential harm. Those people here in Illinois who suspect that they aren't the only victims of a company's bad practices may decide to file or join a class action lawsuit. Doing so can potentially strengthen a victim's claim against a company. Those with questions can speak with an attorney who has experience in this type of claim to determine the best course of action.
